Praying with feet, hands, and votes

Two people I care about are grieving today. They both live near to me. On this crisp morning, I walked to each of their homes and dropped flowers on their doorsteps. As I walked home it struck me that I was praying with my feet. Yes. I have held these friends in my heart and up to God in prayer, but praying with my feet engaged more of me. It engaged my body, my energy, and my hope for their comfort on this hard day. And it also engaged my willingness to play a part in that hope.

This called to mind a quote from Georgia Senator Rev Rapheal Warnock. After winning his senate seat in 2022 in a close run-off race, he said - "I often say that a vote is a kind of prayer for the world we desire for ourselves and for our children." And so I plan to soon pray with my vote as well.

But not before I put my hands to work in prayer, too. Today I'll be receiving a couple hundred postcards that I'll inscribe with some words of encouragement to vote before they're sent off to folks all over the country. You know, sometimes I pray with my hands in an open posture because it helps me open my heart to Spirit's presence. But for the next few days, I'll be praying with a pen in my hand.

May God inspire us all to pray with our feet, hands, and votes.

Peace to you,

Ruth
